Description
The Haleakal Ahinahina Silversowrd lives only on the Haleakala Volcano in Maui. The Silverswords have silvery hairs and fleshy leaves and is especially adapted to the hot dry climate of the Haleakala Volcano. The plants live from 3 to 90+ years. They have a spectacular display of a flowering stalk that rises out of the center of the plant once during the plant’s lifespan. Shortly after the flower bloom the plant dies and scatters its seeds in the wind.
These plants, once thriving, used to be ripped out of the ground and taken home by visitors as souvenirs. Now protected, the plant depends on the management efforts of staff at the Haleakala National Park to ensure its survival. The staff has taken measures to remove pests that may eat the plants and setup fences to keep them out. They remove non-native invasive species of plants that may crowd and compete with Silverswords for resources. These plants are hardy, however, with rising temperatures and lower rainfall, climate change may become the silversword’s biggest threat.
